Has anyone else’s face been under brutal assault lately? For the first time in months the culprit isn’t even the weather, it’s us. Wrapping up in itchy scarves and hats, touching our faces repeatedly throughout day, skipping exfoliation and sufficient cleansing means it’s time for a beauty overhaul. Put your bad habits to bed by following these 5 simple skin care rules to avoid breakouts.

1. Use a gentle face cleanser consistently (key word being gentle – a lot of “acne” face washes will only irritate you more). Right now our skin is ultra sensitive and it requires a product that can treat it in the most delicate manner. Use warm water and stay away from soap which can dry out the skin.

2. Did you wake up with three new pimples after you “cleansed” the night before? Don’t pop, pinch, rub or disturb them in any way. Doing so can make those three little bumps turn into six, not to mention the scarring that is sure to follow. It’s best to let the pimples go away naturally and keep that area cleansed.

3. Sun Screen! Yes we know Mr. Sun only makes his appearance a few times a week, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t there hiding behind the clouds. The properties in a good SPF can help medicate and control your acne while shielding your skin from harmful rays.

4. Up your daily water intake from that one glass in the morning to several bottles throughout the day. It will make a huge difference in your skin by bringing the moisture levels back to normal and it will give it a good glow.

5. Exercise regularly. Where do you think acne comes from? Stress! Working up a good sweat helps you to release anxiety. After your face is drenched in sweat you’ll want to reach for your scrub.
BONUS: Above all else the key to a healthy overhaul is to see an esthetician. As they peer over your fragile face they’ll be able to attack each break out one by one and also give you the products needed to get your skin back to normal.
