I am hopping onto my soapbox today. So, be warned right now.

The weather this past weekend in New York City was absolutely lovely. It was spring at its best. I have noticed that as soon as the weather starts to get warm, I start to crave ice cream! I have to admit, I freaking love ice cream and any excuse to have some will do!

This weekend I noticed as I peered into several frozen yogurt, non-diary ice cream (I love this, will tell you about this next week), and ice cream shops that people were lined up for a taste of frozen goodness. So, I am happy to report that I am not the only one craving ice cream.

That brought me to today’s post where I want to sit all of you down and talk to you about frozen yogurt and how it is NOT going to help you lose weight by accident.

No you don’t need to clean out your ears, you heard me right!! I know we have been told frozen yogurt has fewer calories than “fatty” ice cream so have as much as you want of it, and this is true but my next question is what the heck is in the frozen yogurt? Having fewer calories is not the full story. It can be a part of our journey to lose weight but I want you to lose weight by accident while have beautiful skin, healthy hair, and healthy organs. For that to happen you have to know WHAT you are eating.

Here is the hidden truth…

…if you were to take yogurt and put it in the freezer it would not be smooth and creamy the way it comes out at Pinkberry, Tasti D Lite, or TCBY. They have to add “other ingredients” to make it smooth and creamy.  Here are the ingredients for the original flavor at Pinkberry:

Nonfat milk, sugar, cultured pasteurized nonfat milk with live and active cultures, contains less than 2%: cultured nonfat milk powder, fructose, dextrose, natural flavors, citric acid, guar gum, maltodextrin, mono-and diglycerides, starch

In contrast here are the ingredients for plain vanilla Haagen Dazs ice cream:

Cream, Skim Milk, Sugar, Egg Yolks, Natural Vanilla.

I do prefer you having organic dairy products, however by giving you this example I want to show you the difference between frozen yogurt and real ice cream. You can recognize all the ingredients in the Haagen Daz ice cream. 5 ingredients or less is KEY.

My recommendation is if you want to treat yourself, treat yourself to some good quality (sometimes pricey) ice cream have the “fatty” kind not the low fat low cal kind. You will notice it will take a smaller portion for you to feel satisfied, instead of a whole cup full of frozen yogurt, where you could still go for seconds. Feeling satisfied through quality not quantity is key too.

Next week I will tell you about my favorite ice cream option that isn’t made from dairy..woohoo
