One out of three people will be diagnosed with cancer and it is highly likely that you already know someone with the disease. There is nothing fun or glamorous about the big C, but everyone deserves to look and feel fabulous. That is the philosophy of non-profit organization Hair2Help, and  Spa Week definitely follows the same ideals as our #50dollartreatments. It was founded by celebrity hair stylist James Corbett in October 2010 when he realized that there was a real need to help women affected by cancer.

“Maybe lip gloss and nail polish won’t save the world, but if it makes a woman feel beautiful and takes her mind off the hardships she’s enduring – that’s a beautiful thing,” says Corbett. We’ll toast to that!

With the support of the American Cancer Society’s Hope Lodge, Corbett has held three holistic healing spa days for patients and their caregivers, who are also greatly affected by the disease. “A day in the spa that uses all organic, non-toxic treatments and is tailored to their needs and wishes can help them regain their dignity and self-esteem,” he says.

We’ve discussed oncology massages, but these full-day events  include relieving full body massages along with mani/pedis. One of the scariest things about cancer for a woman is losing her hair so Corbett offers not only haircuts and color but wig styling. Guests are treated from head to toe.

The services don’t stop there. Leading experts in natural approaches to wellness, nutrition, and mind-body awareness provide one-on-one counseling and guidance to clients that go beyond the one day event.

Many women say the spa day has completely changed their outlook. One who struggled with treatment for stage 3 ovarian cancer and deep depression smiles when she recalls how good she felt. “There was a reflexologist who addressed my body in a way that I can hardly describe.  It wasn’t just physical–she gave me a feeling of inner lightness I’ve never had before,” she said. Five different spa therapists worked with the woman.  “I really couldn’t believe how much attention they paid to me.  I don’t know where I would be without this kind of compassion.”

As the organization continues to grow and evolve, Corbett envisions offering a range of seminars on stress management, relaxation, holistic pain management, and individualized hair and makeup.
