The Guinness Book of World Records seeks out the “officially amazing.” There’s a category for everything. One record that tickled our fancy: Australia’s spa-capital Daylesford rubbed its way to the world record for the Largest Simultaneous Massage. In 2010 at Lavandula Lavender, 263 qualified massage therapists and 263 lucky volunteers gathered for a stress-less record-breaking event. And there’s more where that came from.

On this great, inaugural day of Spa Week Spring 2012 booking, for Hot Mom Monday we collaborated with our traveling Hot Mom Squad member, Ava Roxanne Stritt of My Skin Concierge Blog, to compile some of the world’s best, biggest, tallest and otherwise awesome spa records. We present to you: The Guinness Book of Spa Records.

Two gentlemen created the original book after they returned from a shooting party and guzzled a few Guinness beers. So, Ava speculates that, “though not certain, the origins of The Guinness Book of Spa Records must have begun in similar fashion as two spa gals were leaving the sauna and sipping cucumber spa water.”

Delight in these astounding spa records and some of our favorite spa inspired actual Guinness records (indicated by *). Officially relaxing!

Astonishing Facts
from The Guinness Book of Spa Records

Largest Ever Simultaneous Massage*

World’s Largest Spa Resort

In Beijing, China last year, construction at The Shunjing Hot Spring Hotel was completed and it became the largest resort spa in the world. At over 1,055,509 square feet, there is plenty of room for variety. Four floors hold both Japanese and South Asian themed areas. Within the main spa one will also find an aromatherapy area with so many selections your senses won’t know which way to tingle.

World’s Oldest Spa

Abano Terme, Italy is thought to be the oldest known spa in the world with visitors spa-ing as far back as the 9th Century BC. Legend is that the son of the sun, Phaeton, of Greek Mythology, warmed the more 130 thermal spas that can be found in this small town near Venice.  Hot Springs are not the only type of bath you can get in the Veneto region. A Mud Bath is a must, along with the popular massage, of course.

Most People Applying Facial Masks*

The most people applying facial masks at one time was organized by Anglee Cosmetic Co., Ltd. (Taiwan) on October 26,  2010. The faces of  828 were masked and the best part? They were on a Royal Caribbean Cruise between Hong Kong and Taiwan! We bet everyone was so pampered and relaxed afterward it turned into a snooze cruise.

World’s Most Sky-High Spa

Feeling dizzy yet? Well you might be on the 116th floor of the ESPA Spa located in Hong Kong within the highest hotel in the world, The Ritz Carlton, Hong Kong. This sky-high spa delivers a one-of-a-kind place to escape from the hustle and bustle of the city below. The creators took their inspiration from the idea of “being in the clouds,” which meant utilizing soft, smooth and natural materials throughout the spa’s interior including a breathtaking celestial chandelier designed by Eva Menz. Try to make sure you get one of the 6 of 8 treatments rooms with floor to ceiling glass windows with spectacular harbor views.

Largest Spa Chain

As the public has grown to recognize the importance of maintaining a balanced lifestyle focused on spa and wellness, so has the spa chain Massage Envy. They employ over 16,000 massage therapists, who provide more than 250,000 massages every week. They are located in convenient areas close to shopping areas and malls and are very easy to schedule a massage appointment with. Massage Envy has enlightened a new group of consumers to the world of massage. Five of those locations are participating in Spa Week – check them out.

Largest Yoga Class*

The largest yoga class involved 29,973 students from 362 schools who performed a sequence of yogic kriyas  simultaneously for 18 minutes. The vast  group was led by Vivekanand Kendra, at Jiwaji University, Gwalior, India on November 19, 2005.  We bet you could hear “namaste” for miles.

Most Extravagant Spa Treatment

If you feel the need for a facial while strolling down 5th Avenue, look no further than The La Prairie Spa at The Ritz-Carlton New York, Central Park. This ultimate skin investment is a much better deal than one might believe at first glance. The $1,000 White Caviar Illuminating Facial includes a Luminous Full Facial, a Cellular 3-Minute Peel, Hand and Foot Treatments, and an Eye Treatment. As you leave with a brighter, clearer complexion and the full White Caviar Illuminating System (valued at $1,150 alone), it will feel like a steal!

Most Unique Massage

The relaxing Magnolia Massage was created by using ingredients from a tropical Magnolia called Champaca. This completely natural, chemical-free oil ensures anti-aging results. The treatment begins with a Mother of Pearl foot scrub, facial and foot acupressure massage, as well as Thai-style stretching and is then capped off with a full-body Swedish massage. Find this treatment at The Spa at Four Seasons Hotel Atlanta, where one must finish the day at Park 75 with one of their specialty spa drinks using honey from their own beehives on the terrace level of the hotel. (This is Ava’s personal pick.)

Most People Receiving a Foot Massage Simultaneously*

On July 1, 2008, at the Taipei Arena in Taipei, Tawain, 1000 people willingly put their feet up in order to become the most people to receive a foot massage simultaneously. That’s 10,000 toes! But  no little piggy’s were harmed as all participants were massaged by qualified practitioners. The real question:  how many people were ticklish?

Most Soothing Spa “Music” & Best Spa Treatment “Room”

With a location deemed one of the most beautiful in America, it can be hard to stay indoors. There will be no need, if your spa menu pick of the day is the Creekside Massage at L’Auberge de Sedona in Arizona. Treatments here use native ingredients and the spa music is about as natural as it gets as the sound of soothing waters from Oak Creek entice you to unwind.

Most Fashion-Forward Spa

Pages from one of your favorite magazines truly come to life at the first-ever ELLE Spa, located at the iconic Eden Roc Renaissance in Miami Beach. With the gracious style of ELLE and the serenity of the ocean one cannot help but undergo a refreshing transformation. This chic locale is 22,000 square feet of Mediterranean inspired décor, which uses natural stone to enhance its fashion quotient. ELLE Spa is participating in Spa Week – check out their editorialized crop of $50 treatments and enter to win a 3-night stay!
