Actor Cory Monteith, whose portryal of Finn in Glee catapulted him into the limelight, has passed away.

Cory Monteith was born Cory Allan Michael Monteith in Calgary, Alberta on May 11, 1982. He and his older brother, Shaun, lived with his mother Ann, after his parents divorced. In an interview for Parade magazine, Monteith mentioned that he had gone from a good student to one who was cutting class, taking drugs and out of control. He told Parade, “I stole a significant amount of money from a family member. I knew I was going to get caught, but I was so desperate I didn’t care. It was a cry for help. I was confronted and I said, ‘Yeah, it was me.’ It was the first honorable, truthful thing that had come out of my mouth in years.”

At the age of 19, he entered rehab and began to rebuild his life. Monteith began taking acting classes while working as a roofer. He started acting professionally. His first role was in the TV show, Stargate: Atlantis. Roles in Killer Bash, Young Blades, Supernatural  and Smallville followed. He appeared in Final Destination 3 in 2006, played Charlie Tanner in Disney’s Kyle X/Y series. After that show ended, he continued to pick up roles in TV and movies. In 2009, he auditioned for and won the role of Finn Hudson in Glee. He told Parade, ‘Finn started off as the stereotypical dumb jock But as the show has gone on, Finn’s not dumb anymore, really, he’s just a little naïve. The opposite of me.

“I love Finn’s optimism. He’s very idealistic; he wants a good girl to love him, and he chases after what he wants in life—that I can relate to.”

It was on the set of that show that he met and started to date his co-star, Lea Michele.  In late March of this year, a rep for the actor told People, that Monteith had voluntarily entered rehab. “He graciously asks for your respect and privacy as he takes the necessary steps towards recovery.”

Monteith’s latest movies, All the Wrong Reasons, McCanick and Glee! Live at Radio City Music Hall are all in post production.
