At first glance, one would simply think that Eve Lattimore was just an extremely overprotective mother. Then you learn that her son, Tyler, suffers from an extremely rare disease called XP. XP patients cannot come in contact with UV light or they will immediately obtain scorching burns that oftentimes escalate quickly to advanced cancer cases. In fact, it’s extremely uncommon for a child born with XP to live past the age of 20. Tyler spends the daylight hours locked in his room, attending school via Skype, and chatting in online forums with other XP kids. He is allowed out at night, when Eve and the rest of the family try to make his life as normal as possible, with family dinners and allowing Tyler to have friends over. When his parents go to sleep, Tyler ventures outside and snoops on the neighbors—even making a secret friend along the way. From the beginning, the great lengths Eve will go to to protect Tyler are apparent, even if that means she has to sacrifice closeness with her husband David and a normal life for Tyler’s older sister, Melissa. In her life of stress, Eve finds comfort in her best friend and neighbor, Charlotte. That is, until Charlotte’s daughter Amy goes missing one day. This tragedy causes riffs in their usually close block of neighbors. It is not until Amy goes missing that we learn just how far a mother will go to protect her child. It is only then that we get a glimpse into just how deep a mother’s secrets can reside. The Deepest Secret is packed with drama and suspense, keeping the reader enthralled at every turn. Fans of Jodi Picoult will surely enjoy Buckley’s latest drama. I’d definitely recommend it! Arielle Sidrane is the Associate Editor of Spa Week Daily.
