Let’s start by taking a quick quiz. Do you check your makeup in camera mode and ‘accidentally’ take the picture because you look that good? Do you catch your reflection in a store window and stop to snap a photo so you can later relish in the moment? Are at least half of your Instagram pictures close-ups of your face? Do you panic when your phone is about to die because it may mean missing a photo op?

If you said yes to three or more of those questions than you are officially a selfie addict. Don’t worry we’re not judging you. Selfies are sweeping the web and quickly becoming America’s favorite pastime. There’s even an official music video that pays homage to the selfie that’s called… #SELFIE! So don’t hide your passion for pics of yourself. Instead, learn how to master the selfie so your photos get more likes than Kim Kardashian herself!

Here, we break down the key concepts to snapping the ultimate selfie:

  1. Pick The Right Lighting – Lighting is crucial in taking a perfect selfie. You don’t want light that’s too harsh, but too dark always yields that weird blurry effect that defeats the purpose of your immaculate makeup application. The “golden hour,” or the time right before sunset, is ideal for a flattering shot and soft lighting is also recommended.
  2. Choose The Best Angle – Do you have one of those friends who always has to be on the left side in photos? Well, although it can sometimes be obnoxious (I like the left side too!) she does have a point. The right angle can do wonders, especially in a selfie, so practice taking photos and find your best one.
  3. Shoot From Above – Want chiseled cheeks and twinkling eyes? Take your selfie from above. This can easily be done by holding your camera slightly above head level with a slight tilt down. Trust us when we tell you that this is as effective in making you appear slim as it is to actually hit the gym.
  4. Lengthen The Neck – This is a tried and true celebrity trick that is universally flattering. Elongating the neck not only makes your posture look perfect, but it also has a slimming effect. After you master this technique, add a subtle chin tilt down and to the side and your selfies will rival the models in magazines!
  5. Polish With Pampering – Let’s face it, aside from Beyoncé, we don’t just wake up like this. It actually takes work! But you deserve a break, so why not let someone else do the pampering for you. Indulge in a microdermabrasion facial for perfect pores, an eyebrow threading to accentuate your fiercest stare or fresh highlights that shine on screen. Spa treatments for selfie addicts are only $50 during Spa Week, and seriously indulgent.
