New research shows most coffee contains allergens like wheat and soy beans, used by the industry as fillers. Is your coffee making you sick? According to new research revealed at the National Meeting & Exposition of the American Chemical Society, your coffee may be harboring some of America’s most common allergens like wheat and soy beans – among others. Fillers are becoming common place in the coffee bean industry, with ingredients like wheat, soy beans, acai seeds and barely being mixed in to yield higher profits. “With a lower supply of coffee in the market, prices rise, and that favors fraud because of the economic gain,” says research team leader Suzana Lucy Nixdorf, Ph.D. Nixdorf argues that the move to add fillers to coffee is intentional, and that they are not considered impurities, but rather “adulterants.” While the research is certainly alarming, especially for those who have serious allergies to wheat and soy, there is a silver lining – Nixdorf says that her team has found a a way to detect the problematic ingredients. “With our test, it is now possible to know with 95 percent accuracy if coffee is pure or has been tampered with, either with corn, barley, wheat, soybeans, rice, beans, acai seed, brown sugar or starch syrup,” Nixdorf says. This is definitely good news for coffee consumers with allergies, and may serve as an explanation if you’ve been feeling under the weather after enjoying a cup of joe. Nixdorf has yet to announce when the breakthrough coffee test will be released, but it will certainly be an important tool for many Americans. In 2007 I bought a cappuccino machine, not being a regular coffee drinker, and started making several cappuccinos in the morning. At night I was curled up in pain for hours. One side of my stomach was just cramping like the worst period pain. It took me a while to figure out that this would always happen, if I would drink more than 1 coffee drink in a day or if I ate/drank tofu or soy products. I just found out yesterday that I have a soy allergy and was just trying to figure out how my problem with caffeine played into that.
