Over 20 years after Lois Lowry’s award-winning novel was published, fans finally have the chance to see her mesmerizing work translated to the big screen this weekend when The Giver opens in theaters nationwide.

Here’s a quick refresher in case you can’t quite remember the plot (understandable, as the book is on most Middle School reading lists). The Giver is set in what is meant to be a utopian community, controlled by Elders who assign everyone a role within the community. The main character, Jonas (played by Brenton Thwaites), is chosen to be the Receiver of Memories. What his training for this role uncovers changes Jonas, and possibly the entire community, forever.

A bit ahead of her time, Lowry wrote this celebrated story before dystopian novels really became trendy. With a cast of A-List superstars like Meryl Street, Jeff B ridges, Katie Holmes and Taylor Swift, we’re certain that this acclaimed novel’s big screen adaptation will be a can’t-miss summer hit!
