This Spa Week, relax like never before by booking an Infinity Float at Q Flatiron.

Infinity floats are a great way to relax and leave behind the everyday stresses of life, but there’s more to them than that. They have actually been proven to help relieve pain, treat anxiety, improve concentration and creativity, along with a host of other health benefits.

Sometimes referred to as “sensory deprivation,” Infinity Floats allow people to experience anti-gravity-like conditions thanks to a high saturation of epsom salt, also known as magnesium sulphate, in the water. This is what allows people to float effortlessly.

When floating, the body also directly absorbs the quantity of Epsom salt it requires through the skin, like a sponge. This sedates the nervous system, reduces swelling, and relaxes muscles.

When we talked to the spa’s owner, Noran Malouf, he told us, “The benefits of floating are natural, long-term and cumulative. They can be felt immediately because of the state of relaxation you experience.”

He explained that conditions like arthritis, muscular and nerve pain, sports injuries, insomnia, and any stress related conditions could all be helped by floating. It has also been found to help people who suffer from anxiety. Some of Q Flatiron’s clients choose to float one to three times per month for optimal wellness.

Before you get situated in your dimly lit private room, you must first take a quick shower to wash off any oils, perfumes, or products in your hair or on your body. After that, you can choose whether or not to use the provided ear plugs (we suggest you do!) and then it’s time to lose yourself in the floatation tank for a little over an hour.

When you first enter the tank it looks a bit magical with twinkly little stars aligned at the top and a beautiful blue aura. Soothing music plays gently in the background and both the water and the tank are a comfortable temperature, set to reflect the average body temp.

The coolest part of the whole experience, in my opinion, was just how effortless it was to float in the 10 inches of water. I’m not sure exactly what I was expecting but I felt like I was floating on a cloud. Cheesy, but true!

Once you’re comfortable you can turn off all the lights, leaving you in complete darkness. It’s not scary or anxiety-inducing, which is something friends had asked me about. In fact, losing all the light made me feel ultra-soothed and relaxed.

After about ten minutes, the music slowly faded out and I was left to float about in darkness and silence. During this time some people focus on their breathing, others find it helpful to recite mantras and meditate. Personally, I just tried to turn off the endless stream of thoughts constantly running through my brain. Amazingly within a few minutes my mind felt as calm as my body.

One of the qualms I’d had about trying the float tank was that I’d get bored and wouldn’t be able to handle the hour long process but I was shocked when the music came back on and it was time to leave the tank because it had felt more like 15 minutes.

After leaving the tank I took another quick shower to rinse away the Epsom salt. For the next week, my skin had been smoother than it’s ever been in my life. This is not an exaggeration. When I asked Malouf about this he explained that the sulfur in the water helps to improve a whole host of skin issues. “Collagen synthesis improves, connective tissues strengthen and skin becomes firmer, cellulitis is reduced, damaged skin is regenerated, and skin becomes more tender and silky,” he said.
