I recently attended one of Herradura’s “Be the Bartender” mixology classes at The Wren in NYC, where I learned how to make a series of delicious tequila-based cocktails. Here’s one of my faves, guaranteed to get your weekend started right!

The Herradura Tequila mixology class was taught by The Wren’s head bartender, Melissa Derfler. The class provided step-by-step instructions for three unique Herradura cocktails, each using one of the different tequila expressions: Silver, Reposado, and Añejo. At this particular class, each attendee got to go behind the bar and mix up the cocktail of their choice. My boyfriend and I chose to make the Garden of Eden, a spicy little libation complete with made-from-scratch Apple Shrub, a vinegar-based cocktail syrup.

Bottoms up!

Garden of Eden

1.5 oz Herradura Reposado
0.75 oz Apple Shrub*
0.5 oz Lemon Juice
Hard Apple Cider (to top)
*For the Apple Shrub:
1 Cup Vermont Boiled Cider
1/4 Cup Apple Vinegar
1/2 Habanero Pepper

1. Prepare the Apple Shrub. Combine the boiled cider, apple vinegar, and habanero. Let them sit for at least an hour, tasting every so often to achieve the desired spice level. Then strain out the habanero.

2. Make the Cocktail. Combine the Herradura, Apple Shrub, and lemon juice in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake and strain over fresh ice in a highball glass. Top the drink with hard apple cider.

3. Drink Up!
