It’s Mani Monday and we’re teaching you a simple plaid nail tutorial in honor of Tartan Day.

Calling all Scottish descendants and plaid lovers alike! We’re celebrating Tartan Day with this quick and easy plaid nail art. We chose some classic colors and ended up with a very holiday-friendly look, but you can easily swap out the colors to match the season — or your family’s tartan!

For this tutorial you will only need one nail polish and two stripers. Unfortunately, our local CVS was out of green stripers. If you run into this problem, you can simply use a regular polish and utilize the brush from any other striper. Just make sure to wash the brush before and after switching colors to prevent any mixing.

What you need:

  • Your favorite red nail polish
  • White nail art striper
  • Green nail art striper

What to do:

  1. Start by painting the entire nail with red polish and let it dry completely.
  2. Start by painting two thick horizontal stripes and two thick vertical stripes on each nail. This will create the shape of a pound sign (#). Allow stripes to fully dry.
  3. Add two white stripes to each nail: one on the outside of the left vertical stripe, and one on the inside of the bottom horizontal stripe.
  4. Finish off with your favorite top coat and you’re good to go!
