A certified CrossFit and CrossFit Endurance Coach, Sarah has also a nationally ranked endurance athlete who’s competed for Team USA at the world level in the sport of Duathlon. We were fascinated by her unique journey from simple fitness lover to nationally ranked athlete and founder of an innovative activewear brand. An Interview With Fashletics Creator & FounderSarah Wilson What inspired you to found Fashletics? I have been a jewelry designer for over 10 years, but when I moved to Miami in 2007 my passion for fitness was reignited. I joined a triathlon club as a way to stay active and meet new people, and ended up falling in love with training. Fashletics started as combination of my newfound love for fitness and jewelry design. I started creating pieces that were inspired by my experiences in triathlon training and later CrossFit. I realized that fitness jewelry was the perfect way for a woman to express her strength in her everyday style. Who is it for and what’s the meaning behind it? Fashletics is for people who want to celebrate their fitness accomplishments, set goals, and stay motivated. Each piece is an expression of strength and a badge of honor. I truly believe that physical training can lead to positive changes outside the gym walls. Fashletics serves as a reminder of the strength and confidence that is within all of us. The same strength and confidence we use to lift weights and run marathons can be used to improve our everyday lives. Have you always been into fitness? If not, what sparked you to get into fitness? I have always been into fitness. In my high school and college days I was a runner, and got into marathon running in my adult life. I love the gym. I love to sweat. I love to feel strong. I began to take training more seriously when I moved to Miami in 2007 and got into Triathlons and CrossFit. I was really just looking for a way to get involved in a new community. I had no idea it would turn me into such a competitive person, or that I would end up competing at such and serious and intense level. A Fashletics tank. I competed in the World Championships in Duathlon (running, biking, and then running) for Team USA and qualified for Worlds in 2010 and in 2011. In 2010 I got hit by a car while training on my bike, two weeks before what would have been my first World Championship race. It was heartbreaking. But I recovered, trained again, qualified again and got to race in Edinburgh, Scotland against athletes from all over the world! These are the types of experiences that inspire my designs for Fashletics. The jewelry collection is not just about the physical aspect of training – it’s all about overcoming things mentally as well. The physical experiences force us to deal with failures and setbacks on a mental and emotional level. If you can’t get your head in the game, your body doesn’t stand a chance. Many of my designs are about having a healthy and positive mindset because I know first hand what an important ingredient that is in training and in life. What’s your biggest motivator when it comes to fitness? I love being a strong woman. I love being able to do things that people don’t expect me to be able to do. I feel alive when I challenge myself physically. It gives me a sense of confidence that I can’t find anywhere else. A Fashletics charm necklace. What’s your fitness routine? A typical week of exercise for me consists of 4 days of CrossFit… 5 if I am lucky enough to squeeze it in! Now that I am almost 5 month pregnant I have dialed down the intensity of my workouts, but not the frequency. Working out regularly seems to combat my pregnancy fatigue and also helped alleviate morning sickness early on… much to my surprise! I also enjoy an occasional run on the beach or yoga class as a form of relaxation. And I consider chasing after my 2.5 year old to be a daily form of exercise as well! I love your story about fighting for female equality in the male-dominated fitness arena. Can you talk about that a bit? Everyone should feel welcome and have the same opportunities in the sports/fitness world. The idea that lifting weights is for guys is so old fashioned, but unfortunately that stereotype starts at a very young age. In the article you are referring to I referenced my own gym class back in elementary school – boys did pull-ups while girls did flexed arm hang. All this is doing is sending the message that boys are stronger than girls, and girls needn’t try to hang (literally) with the boys. What I love about CrossFit is that everybody is on an equal playing field. Women are encouraged to participate in the same exercises as men and are praised for their strength – not for being skinny. Fashletics focuses on loving your body for what it is capable of, not just for what it looks like. A Fashletics jewelry pouch or coin purse. What message would you give to women who feel intimidated about joining the fitness world? You need strength in your life. It’s not about being male or female, it’s about being human. The longer you neglect your body, the sooner you will become reliant on other people. You were made to move! It’s all about finding the form of exercise that is right for you. If you hate running, don’t join a running club. Find something that suits your personality that you will actually look forward to doing. There are so many options these days, I truly believe there is something for everyone… yoga, pilates, CrossFit, martial arts, spinning, Zumba…Try something for a few weeks, and if you don’t’ like it, try something else. Don’t give up altogether! It’s like dating J If you look long enough and keep an open mind, eventually you will find your fitness match. And I promise that once you get into a grove, you will see positive changes in so many other aspects of your life that go beyond good health. Talk about motivating! Yoga a minimum of 2 hours a week and 30 minutes guided mediation. This keeps me sane mostly and reasonably fit. The goal in mind was to prepare for a one piece bathing suit without feeling like a beached whale. I think I am doing alright.
