Ah, summertime. While it should be one of my favorite seasons of the year, I just can’t bring myself to love it as much as other people do. Why? Because the hot hot heat makes it almost impossible for my makeup to stay put. Just waiting five minutes for the subway is enough to melt away all the time and energy I’ve put into dolling myself up for work or a night on the town. That’s why I set out to find products that keep my makeup in place. If you’ve found yourself with the same makeup meltdown problem, check out my list of the top priming and makeup setting products to keep your face from melting off this summer.

Too Faced Hangover Primer

Too Faced Hangover Primer, $32

This charming Too Faced Hangover Primer is formulated with coconut water, electrolytes, and probiotics to nourish dehydrated skin, whether it be from the drying effects of the sun or a few too many margaritas after a night out. Not only that, but it works over time to create the perfect canvas — so makeup goes on flawlessly and stays put all day long, even when temperatures soar. Since the formula is silicone-free, it won’t clog your pores or cause breakouts. Plus it smells like coconuts, one of my favorite summery scents!

Skindinavia Oil Control Makeup Primer Spray

Skindinavia Makeup Primer Spray, $35 4 oz or $49 8 oz

Skindinavia’s Makeup Primer Spray with oil control is another silicone-free primer I absolutely adore. As someone with very oily skin, I need all the oil control help I can get in the spring and summer. This lightweight formula manages to do just that while keeping my pores from becoming clogged and my skin from breaking out. With just a few spritzes of this primer, my makeup goes on beautifully and stays put. It also stamps out shine and really delivers on its promise to control oil. When using this product, I notice that my skin is much less oily and my makeup stays matte for longer. Together these benefits have nearly eliminated my need for blotting papers and constant touch-ups.

Benefit POREfessional

Benefit POREfessional, $31

I don’t know about you, but in the summer it seems like my pores somehow double in size. So POREfessional primer is a must-have for me. It works immediately to minimize the appearance of pores and fine lines, making my skin look super smooth and flawless. After I’ve applied the lightweight oil-free formula, I’m always instantly happy that the pores on my nose don’t look nearly as horrifying as they did before. POREfessional is an excellent pre-makeup primer that can be used on top of makeup, too. To use as primer, apply to the center of the face, moving the product outward with your fingertips. To use throughout the day over makeup to shrink pores and reduce lines, just pat it on lightly and blend.

Smashbox Photo Finish Hydrating Under Eye Primer

Smashbox Photo Finish Hydrating Under Eye Primer, $29

Ever since discovering Smashbox’s Photo Finish Hydrating Under Eye Primer, I haven’t had to worry about my concealer melting away and revealing my dark undereye circles. This little tube of goodness ensure that they’ll stay covered up. It also keeps my undereye concealer from creasing and minimizes fine lines around my eye area. Just dab a few small dots under your eyes and gently blend with your pinky before applying makeup. You’ll stay looking fresh even in the hottest weather conditions. This primer can also be used without makeup because the hydrating formula instantly brightens the under eye area, no matter how lacking you may be in the sleep department.

COOLA Makeup Setting Spray, $36

COOLA knocked it out of the park with their first-ever makeup setting spray. The weightless mattifying mist prevents makeup from melting down while its SPF 30 protects skin from harmful UV rays. Made from 70% certified organic ingredients, this product is formulated with cucumber and aloe extracts to soothe and refresh skin. It also contains Hyaluronic Acid which hydrates and softens skin. Overall, this setting spray reduces the appearance of pores and wrinkles. Better yet, it provides much-needed sun protection — which is essential for any beauty routine no matter the season. Since the formula is both lightweight and mattifying, you won’t have to worry about your skin looking or feeling oily. After applying makeup, simply spray COOLA Makeup Setting Spray and go about your day! If you’re spending a lot of time in the sun, make sure to reapply just like you would your regular sunscreen.

Supergoop Defense Refresh Setting Mist SPF 50, $12 1 oz or $28 3.4 oz

I was immediately intrigued when I discover Supergoop, because it’s the first and only skincare brand completely dedicated to UV protection. The brand’s Defense Refresh Setting Mist SPF 50 with rosemary delivers UV photoaging protection while setting makeup and controlling oil. Defense Refresh is formulated with Silica Silylate, which controls oil and scatters light to reduce shine and create a matte finish. It also contains rosemary, an antioxidant-rich essence that will help to improve your complexion and soothe any inflammation. All it takes is a couple of refreshing sprays of the lightweight formula to keep your makeup looking great all day long. Just be sure to reapply every two hours when in direct sunlight.
