SpotYoga takes place above the chaos of New York City on top of some of the most exclusive rooftops in Manhattan. I am not much of a morning person. When I signed up for a 7:00 am yoga class, admittedly I wasn’t thrilled. What was the driving force that pushed me out of bed before 6:00 am on a Friday morning? Not only was I was committed to completing day 2 of our two week Health and Wellness Challenge, but I wasn’t heading out to the average yoga class. Had I been heading off the typical yoga class, squeezing my mat next to some questionable strangers inside of a sweaty studio, I probably would have hit snooze. Instead, I was headed to Ink48 Hotel’s exclusive penthouse rooftop. Thanks to the lovely people at SpotYoga I was on my way to soak up some Vitamin D while calmly sinking into child’s pose before going about my busy day. When I arrived at the penthouse suite, I ascended the stairs and was greeted by a gorgeous view of the city. I could see everything from the Hudson River to Midtown’s massive skyscrapers and it was absolutely breathtaking. Hundreds of feet above the bustling New York streets sat 15 yoga mats graciously spaced out ready for an hour-long, early morning stretch sesh. Already feeling rejuvenated by the beautiful view, I got settled in the back and sat quietly as the cool morning breeze washed over me. Right before class started, five men that looked to be in their mid-twenties strolled in and took the mats in front of me, announcing that this was their first yoga experience. I was thrilled. Finally, I was not going to be the least skilled person in the room (or rather, on the rooftop), which is something that has become a common occurrence for me. As confused looks crossed their faces with every mention of unfamiliar terms like “Warrior II” and “Chaturanga,” I suddenly felt like a seasoned yogi. Compared to the newbies I felt almost as skilled as Dashama as I eased into each pose. As we flowed through a series of simple sequences I was continuously impressed with my ability to keep up. The instructor only corrected me once, which I must say, is a personal victory. Unlike many classes I have taken previously, this class was able to accommodate beginner and veteran patrons alike. Moderations were announced for the freshman, and variations were added for the more seasoned participants. SpotYoga managed to find the perfect balance for every skill level. By the time we finished, I was feeling totally rejuvenated. It didn’t feel like I had dragged myself out of bed at the wee hours of the morning, I felt relaxed and ready to take on the rest of the day. Plus, it didn’t hurt to have a gorgeous view to soak in throughout the duration of the class. If you’re interested in experiencing a unique yoga atmosphere and want to gain access to some of the city’s most exclusive rooftops (without the hassle of long lines and the judgemental eye of a bouncer), SpotYoga offers classes on top of Manhattan’s most impressive spots for just $34 a session.
