For day 9 of our two week Health and Wellness Challenge, we hit the rowing machines at CityRow.

To celebrate another day of our Health and Wellness Challenge, I decided to try something a little different. Now, I know that rowing classes are nothing new, but this studio is special because unlike most gyms, they use water-based rowing machines. These types of machines offer a seriously authentic workout. Much like actually rowing on lake or river, they engage the user’s entire body. I’ve never taken a rowing class so I had no idea what to expect when I walked into CityRow’s spacious gym. I thought we would just be on the machine rowing away for the entire hour. When I arrived, I found out that there was so much more to it. Weights, push-ups, planks, and even some yoga-inspired moves were all part of the one-hour sweat-filled session.

The class started with a warm up and then we moved on to learning about our machines. After that, it was time to start rowing away. Thankfully, I had a little bit of experience on a rowing machine, so I didn’t feel like I was totally floundering. But, when the instructor announced that we would be dismounting and completing six minutes of planks, I nearly cried. I can last approximately 20 seconds in a plank before falling flat on the floor, so this was going to be quite the sight to see if anyone else in the class were to catch a glimpse. Thankfully, we switched it up from regular planks to side planks and then elbow planks, so I was able to complete about three minutes worth of planks, a personal best.

Each time we jumped back on our machines, I felt empowered because I was able to finish each set of 500 meters before many of my classmates. When we rowed in unison I nearly forgot we were exercising. Focusing on the lead rower really helped me take my mind off the workout. Even with my mind at ease there was the added threat of pushups for anyone who fell out of sync so that helped me remain super focused and motivated not to stray from the pack.

With sore abs the next day, I knew I was one step closer to toning up my bikini body. Because of that, I think we can officially call this a row-mance. I loved CityRow’s signature class and I’d do it again in a heartbeat!
