For this two part interview series, we chatted with founder of Yummie, Heather Thomson, to find out about the fabulous mother of two. When Heather’s not working on her mega successful clothing line or vacationing in gorgeous places like Turks & Caicos, she’s taking steps to fill the world with wellness and taking care of her own wellbeing. Find out more below. A little birdie told us that you’re a student at the Integrative School of Nutrition. Can you tell us more about that? Yes! The Integrative School of Nutrition is helping to prepare me to educate and support others to build healthy new habits and create sustainable lifestyle changes. Why is studying nutrition and wellness important to you? Aging, wisdom, knowledge and being a mom. I have a beautiful family, and I want to be around for a very long time. I want to teach them about stacking the odds in our favor, making wise choices, reversing DNA and listening to our bodies. Understanding the glaring warning signs we are seeing is an important piece. Rising up and forcing change starts from the bottom up and it’s all in the numbers. We have alarming cases of disease in this country, heart disease, cancer, diabetes, obesity, and in our children. It basically boils down to craving and increasing my knowledge to bring about change and hopefully doing my part to encourage and promote tomorrow’s heath care and prevention system vs the disease treatment and management system we currently have in this country. We have the knowledge that most of the diseases we are treating and trying to manage in this country are lifestyle related and preventable, and reversible. And I want to be a part of educating people with every bite. Bliss. Know where your food is coming from, and don’t be afraid to ask questions. This one of the most important things you can do for your health Eat fresh. Eat locally and seasonally. Try to get away from packaged, processed, and factory farmed foods. What you eat is important, but it’s not the only thing that is important to living a healthy life. Making sure your ‘primary food’ is intact is crucial as well. Are you happy at work? In your relationships? How is your spiritual life? Health and wellness is all about the balance of life. If someone is miserable, but eats well, they’re still going to be susceptible to illness. How will you use your degree once you earn it? I plan to be an advocate for health and wellness changes. I want to help educate people about healthy choices, and stacking the odds in our favor. I plan to include these messages in my public speaking engagements, continue to host health and wellness retreats, and find likeminded industry partners for new initiatives. We’re dying to learn more about Yummie’s upcoming line of loungewear. What can you tell us about it? Our loungewear is launching on Yummielife.com and in stores late September. Eating right is crucial to my busy lifestyle. Smart health choices are out there, we just need to make the right ones. I seek out farm to table restaurants. I don’t eat factory farmed meats, and I also crave greens. It’s tempting to go for quick-fix diets but maintaining a healthy lifestyle requires long-term lifestyle changes. Everyone is individual, and what works for me might not work for you, but setting smart goals will help you make healthier food choices. What’s your favorite healthy meal (or meals) to eat on a busy day? Boiled eggs with hot sauce or sea salt is great for a quick breakfast or snack. I also like smashed avocados on sourdough toast on the go. Sourdough bread doesn’t immediately turn into sugar, so that’s always my bread of choice – and it tastes great! I will grab a green juice and handful of nuts if I’m in a rush, and don’t have time to sit and eat. I’ve found there’s really just no reason to skip a meal. And for dinner on a busy day I love the simplicity of quinoa and leafy greens or a quick bowl of rice and beans. Finally a detox where I can eat and enjoy! Try to set achievable fitness goals but it’s important to realize that sometimes you will fall short and beating yourself up doesn’t help. Each day begins a new, so just start each day over with the right intentions -there’s no such thing as the perfect balance – try your best to focus on the goals and your intentions and you’ll see results. What’s your favorite skincare product? I use Dr. Gross for my skincare. I love Salt of the Earth lotions and body scrubs they are great to exfoliate. And I use Mio Skincare’s the Activist, and their gym kit is perfect post workout. Just got a @dennisgrossmd facial and scarfing up my @dgskincare favs!
