I have problem skin – but then again, doesn’t everyone really? I’ve talked about my struggle with acne before, and it has left me with hyperpigmentation and scarring that you couldn’t believe. It’s remedied usually by my makeup regime, which only ends up clogging my pores and causing (you guessed it) more acne! I was getting tired of it. So when I heard about the IPL Photofacial, it seemed like the cure to everything that ailed me.

IPL Photofacial wasn’t exactly something I was familiar with, but Effie from the Medical Spa Of Brian D. Cohen M.D was happy to explain it to me. Essentially, it is a non-abrasive and non-invasive rejuvenation of the skin using an enhanced form of Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) – BroadBand Light (BBL). Using different kind of light, it is designed to help improve the signs of sun damage, rosacea, brown spots, and acne scarring. Sounding like something that could work perfectly for me, Effie and I scheduled a time that I could come into the office to experience the effects first hand.

The Medical Spa Of Brian D. Cohen M.D’s offices were extremely nice – modern, chic, and clean. Basically everything you could want when visiting a med spa. I filled out the usual paperwork – at this point a pretty painless and quick process – before Effie brought me into the treatment room. Laying down on the treatment table, Effie tied my hair back and cleansed my face to assess what needed to be done. With a professional eye, she was quick to tell me what sections of my face required work. She explained that she would be using three different lasers during the treatment, each designed to reduce different scars and redness on my skin.

As she lathered up my face with the gel that would act as the conductor for the light, Effie explained how she would be starting with the most intense light, designed to reduce the redness of my skin. I’ll admit that I was a bit nervous – laser treatments aren’t something that I’m particularly experienced with, but I was willing to give it a shot. Since the light is so intense, I was required to put on protection for my eyes. To be honest, that’s probably one of the parts I enjoy the most – especially when my appointments are so early in the morning. More than once I’ve fallen asleep the moment those glasses went on.

When the treatment started, I had to admit, it was slightly uncomfortable. Effie was quick and efficient, though, and the worst of it was over within only a quick few minutes. With the first session done, the next was used to target my brown spots and acne scars. This stage was noticeably less intense than the first – both in light and discomfort. Effie and I managed to chat a bit as she methodically zapped away the blemishes from my skin.

The last step, Effie informed me, was a quick laser designed to treat developing acne. I was all on board for that – get rid of those suckers before they could do more damage to my skin! This was the least intense of my treatments, and felt nothing more than like warm metal touching my skin. When my glasses came off, I was feeling like a champ! Effie gave me instructions on how to take care of my skin in the aftermath – no exfoliation, keep out of the sun, basically stay away from anything that might agitate it further. The results, she told me, would take about two weeks to really show.

Since then, I’ve been waiting in anticipation to see how it went. And let me tell you, I’m really happy with the results. Though I’ve had some break outs on my cheeks since, the redness of the area there and around my nose has definitely decreased. Most notably, the scarring and brown marks on my forehead have really diminished. I’m definitely going to be planning my trip back, because I think I finally found the solution to my redness and scars!
