Vacations are a time to relax, unwind and escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. They also provide an opportunity to explore the attractions, history and culture of the destination you’re visiting. While traveling is supposed to be relaxing and enjoyable, things like jet lag and overindulging in unhealthy foods can take a toll on your body.

As you enjoy your summer vacations, be mindful of these tips to help you stay healthy and happy when you travel.

Tip #1: Drink More Water

While traveling, you should drink more water that you ordinarily would. If you’re a frequent flier, then you know that air travel increases the need to stay hydrated. The air in airplane cabins has super low humidity and moisture levels, making passengers more prone to dehydration. If you’re dehydrated, you may feel fatigued and dizzy and be at a higher risk for contracting an illness. To avoid dehydration, it’s recommended to drink 8 ounces of water per hour and avoid or limit sugary drinks and alcoholic beverages that can promote dehydration.

Once you get off the plane, don’t ditch your hydration routine. Whether you’re headed to Barcelona or the Caribbean, you probably have some sangria or piña coladas planned. To ensure you’re drinking enough water, pack a 32 oz. refillable water bottle and finish it two or three times a day. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) permits travelers to bring an empty, refillable water bottle through security, so this will also benefit you during your flight.

Tip #2: Hydrate Your Skin

The conditions inside the airplane cabin can also dehydrate your skin. Drinking plenty of water can help prevent dry, flaky or itchy skin, but it’s also a good idea to pack a travel-size moisturizer. Apply it to your skin periodically throughout the flight to keep your skin moisturized, hydrated and healthy.

Tip #3: Make Time for Exercise

On vacation, it can be easy to neglect our fitness routines. Not only can regular exercise help keep off extra pounds, but also it will keep your mind and immune system healthy.

While you may not want to waste a two hours of prime vacation time at the hotel gym, there are plenty of other ways to stay active on your trip. For starters, explore your destination on your feet, instead of driving, whenever possible. Also create workout routine that works for your schedule. If you enjoy jogging, map out a scenic route for your daily jog. If you prefer yoga or mat exercises, download your favorite workout videos on your phone, tablet or laptop, so you can do them no matter where you are. Even exercising for 20 minutes can make a big difference and won’t hinder your vacation plans.

Tip #4: Be Conscious of What You Eat

Along with exercise, it’s important to stick to healthy foods. While immersing yourself in the culture includes sampling the local cuisine, you can do so in a smart way. Limit your consumption of fried and other unhealthy foods, and instead try natural treats, fruits and vegetables that are native to the region. When you arrive at your destination, head to the local market to stock up on fresh, healthy foods.  Eating nutrient-rich foods will give you the energy boost you need to enjoy your trip to the fullest.

Tip #5: Disconnect from Your Work/Home Life

Are you someone who’s constantly glued to their phone? Vacation is when you should be detoxing from the stresses of everyday life. If you’re constantly checking your texts, emails and social media, then you’re not really focusing on relaxing and making the most of your vacation.

Unplug from your electronic devices. If you’re required to check in for work, pick a designated time to check and answer your emails and then disconnect once you’re finished.
