Ah, the beach. Nothing relaxes me more than the image of sand at my feet, the sound of crashing waves in the background. Most people, in general, enjoy spending time by the water – whether it be lakes, rivers, or oceans. While for most of us, the winter cold has left us craving that beach time, have you ever wondered why? Why do we love being by the water so much?

Well, science has come up with an answer!

In his recent book, Wallace J. Nichols explains the psychological effects of how being near, in, on, or under water can make you happier, healthier, and more connected to the world around you. Using cutting-edge neuroscience and compelling stories from those with personal connections to the water, he shows how proximity to water can improve performance, increase calm, diminish anxiety, and increase professional success. The reason, Nichols says, is because we fall into a “blue mind” when by the water.

Water, Nichols explains, can induce a meditative state. Much like yoga, your mind is brought to a calm focus when near water due to the movement and sound of the water. Instead of focusing on our troubles, our mind instead becomes engaged by the water – sort of like white noise. Though it takes the brain’s attention, it does not overwhelm it, which allows the brain to be relaxed but focused. Nichols also explains that exercising in or near water can be more beneficial than regular exercise. Exercising in water has always been used as a low impact way of working the muscles. But working out near the water can also have it’s benefits. Because of the relaxed state our mind takes around water, the mind is given a mental boost as opposed to when we work out in a hectic environment, such as the gym.
