Though you’ve developed a diligent skincare routine with the intention of maintaining healthy, youthful skin, your daily regimen may be having a reverse affect. Find out if you’re guilty of making these common skincare mistakes that actually age the skin.  


Mistake #1: Falling Asleep in Your Makeup

We’re all guilty of this one. When we come home after a late night at work or night out with the girls, it can be easy to just tumble into bed, without tending to our skin. While accidentally falling asleep in your makeup for one night isn’t a huge deal, making a habit of it will have a horrible effect on your complexion.

A survey shows one-third of women sleep in their makeup at least twice a week. Nix the habit because sleeping in your makeup causes clogged pores and oil glands, as well as dryness, redness, inflammation, dark spots, fine lines and brittle eyelashes.

Mistake #2: Not Wearing Sunscreen Every Day, or Applying It Incorrectly

We all know the sun’s UV rays are one of the biggest threats to our skin. In fact, these hazardous rays are responsible for 80% of skin aging. With that said, the best defense you have against skin aging is using a good sunscreen— and not just during the warm season.

Whether you rely on sunscreen or a foundation with SPF, make sure it has the right ingredients. Choose a broad spectrum product with an SPF of 30 or higher. A broad spectrum product will protect against UVA rays, as well as UVB rays. Apply your sunscreen every day, regardless of the weather forecast. In addition to your face, don’t forget about your hands, ears, neck, chest and lips.

Mistake #3: Popping or Picking Your Pimples

We all pop or pick our pimples sometimes, but it’s one of the worst things you can do for your skin. Popping a pimple releases bacteria onto the surrounding skin, which can lead to more breakouts. And, if you use your fingers or fingernails, you can cause scarring, irritation and wrinkles.

Yes, it’s true that a skincare professional may pop your pimples during a facial. But, they have the right tools to do so. And, an esthetician or dermatologist applies downward pressure, versus squeezing it from the side. If a blemish has sprouted, wash your face with a clean wash cloth. When it’s ready to pop, the pressure will be enough to drain it.

Mistake #4: Over-Exfoliating

It’s recommended to exfoliate to no more than 2 to 3 times per week. Over-exfoliating can irritate your skin and remove its protective barrier, causing inflammation and exposing the skin to sun damage and other environmental toxins. Long-term inflammation and sun exposure can lead to redness, fine lines, dark spots, and wrinkles, among other issues.

Mistake #5: Using Toxic Products

Many beauty and skincare products on the market are riddled with toxic chemicals that are doing more harm than good. A lot of these products contain chemical preservatives, which act as free radicals and age your skin.  Be sure to read a product’s ingredients before using it.
