Welcome to Workout Wednesdays! Each Wednesday, we will be providing you with the inside scoop on all things fitness! This week read about how “abs are created in the kitchen but your core is sculpted” in The PE Club’s TRX Core Strength class.

We have taken a lot of fitness classes in the city, but by far our favorite is The P.E. Club’s TRX Core Strength class. The classes are so innovative because the class size is capped off at 9 students so the focus is on each individual’s needs for the entire 50-minute class. Also, you immediately feel at home as a feeling of true fitness authority radiates from each instructor. They care about your story, where you want your journey to go and how their training/seven classes can get you there. We were fortunate enough to talk to Lisa Niren, highly accredited, P.E. Club instructor. Her experience is vast as she has coached at Flywheel Sports and Peloton Cycle and  now teach[es] at CityRow, CycleBar as well as The PE Club. She holds certificates in Kettlebell L1 & L2, ACE Group Fitness, Mad Dogg Spinning and Schwinn Indoor Cycling.

What makes The P.E. Club stand out?

The P.E. Club is, as one of our regular clients says,“the UES’ best kept secret in fitness.” We are a private training & boutique fitness studio which offers the best in strength & functional training one-on-one or in a group class setting. What sets us apart is our dedication to giving our clients personalized attention & customize programming even in a group class setting. We understand injuries, modifications, progressions & create workouts that help everyone progress, no matter their level.

Describe the atmosphere? Ideal demographic? All levels?

The P.E. Club is warm & inviting, its as if you’re walking into your own home when you come take class or train. It is stocked with all the amenities you could possibly need, so it feels even more like you are at home when you walk in the bathrooms, approach the front desk, sit in the waiting area or grab tea or water between classes. Everyone gets to know you by name and really takes the time to understand anything that is going on with you physically. It is the ultimate environment to improve your fitness & get stronger.

What is your ultimate health/fitness tip you swear by?

Every morning before grabbing my morning coffee & vitamins, I start my day with lemon water. It is bright, citrusy, and energizing. If you don’t have lemons in the house, fear not, you can add a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar instead. It helps to flush out toxins and release excess fluids, giving you a fresh start to the day.Drinking water at the correct times maximizes its effectiveness on the human body.

I always tell people who are intimidated to take my class to?

You are stronger than you think, stronger than you know.Meaning, you are capable of taking a class and you will finish stronger & more accomplished. I love a challenging class, and I like my teaching style to emulate the class that I want to be taking. I do not strive to teach a class that is unrealistically hard, but is challenging and layers on options to help you consistently get better. My classes will always ask you to push beyond your limits, conquer things you didn’t think you could do and help you grow stronger on a daily basis, which is what keeps you coming back day after day.  My goal is to provide an experience that has a flow and tells a story. Each song on my playlist and every exercise is placed in an order for a purpose, but is not routine and changes daily. I like to keep moving the entire time. I find that when you take this approach, not only do clients remain engaged, it removes the time when their mind would otherwise wander on today’s to-do list or other things happening in their life.  I like this 50 min experience to be my time to capture your attention, play incredible music and challenge you to push beyond your limits.

When I’m teaching, I’m most impressed by a student who?

Gives 100% of their effort to the workout, is willing to try something new, even if they fail,  and is willing to layer on options that they are capable of but might be outside of their comfort zone. Working in that place, outside your comfort zone, that has the ability to change your life, push you to your edge & help you get stronger. I say this a lot in my classes but use each workout as an opportunity to check in – where are you today and where are you willing to go. Try something new. You might fail, but if you do, fail gloriously and know that you tried. Absolutely nothing makes me happier than watching something suddenly “click” in your brain, or having someone tell me that coming to class has literally changed his or her life.
