Welcome to Workout Wednesdays! Each Wednesday, we will be providing you with the inside scoop on all things fitness! We have partnered with Crunch for our June Mend Your Man Giveaway, which honors men’s fitness. To coincide with that and not alienate our ladies, we will be featuring one of Crunch’s customized classes for the rest of June!

This week, we were fortunate to shed our shoes and try the coveted BARE class. Crunch describes it as “the only barefoot balancing training workout that is designed to improve balance, posture and strength – all while creating a strong lean body from the ground up.” We caught up with Deborah Horton, Crunch Group Fitness Manager of their 81st St. location to find out how one class can combine the best moves from Pilates, yoga and balancing training.

What makes Crunch stand out?

Our unique blend of FITNESS and ENTERTAINMENT – a safe and effective workout is guaranteed, wrapped in some serious FUN!

Tell us about your background as a fitness instructor?

I’ve danced my whole life and started teaching dance classes even as a teenager!  My dance background and teaching experience have definitely helped to inform how I teach all of my classes now.  I’ve been a fitness instructor with Crunch for 8 years now – and love it every day – it feels like home!

What’s the one thing you always do when planning a class?

Make sure I have a killer playlist ready to rock!

Describe the atmosphere? Ideal demographic? All levels?

All are welcome, all the time. No judgments. Do your best with exactly where you are TODAY! We’re all in this together.

What is your ultimate health/fitness tip you swear by?

Consistency is KEY!!

I always tell people who are intimidated to take my class to?

Try it at least three times – if it’s still not for you, find the class that speaks to you.  Stand somewhere that makes you feel comfortable and go at your pace. You got this!I also ask for injuries and modifications before class and offer multiple levels for each movement – so there’s really something for everyone.

When I’m teaching, I’m most impressed by a student who?

LISTENS to their body and does the appropriate modification offered rather than pushing too hard and risking injury.I also love a good SMILE from the crowd. Share the love! 😀

When I’m feeling unmotivated to work out I?

I treat myself to some fun new fitness gear!

A favorite workout track of your current playlist is?

“Walking Song” by Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs – haha!  It’s perfect for my Pilates and BARE classes because it has a consistent beat but also feels light and energetic with a slight Tribal vibe.
