There are very few things workout classes that we will willingly wake-up at sunrise for. A Refine Method class is one of them. Why do you ask? Because Harvard educated and founder Brynn Putnam has tailored each class to incorporate the latest technologies to ensure each client is properly working out for their needs, goals and restrictions, which is she can proudly say, Refine Method offers New York’s Smartest Workout (each class is a high-intensity 50- minute boot camp that guides you through a full body elevated experience.

What makes Refine Method stand out?

Our slogan is #BeBetter and it speaks to the defining principle of our method. Refine is not a finished product but rather an approach to fitness that continues to improve. We follow the saying: Methods are many, but principles are few; methods may change, but principles never do. We will always remain true to our core principles, but our techniques will continue to evolve. I think the promise to our clients that we will relentlessly pursue their best workout makes us stand out.


Tell us about your background as a fitness instructor?

 Many of my clients were working out daily, but not seeing results which left me wondering how much of what I knew about fitness was fact and how much was a myth. I spent a year travelling the country to learn from top exercise scientists and trainers and from there Refine was born.

What’s the one thing you always do when planning a class?

Have a big picture plan. Unlike most fitness studios, we offer results-oriented training, not exercise. There is a difference between 60 sweaty minutes and a workout that has been tailored to your body and your goals as part of a larger roadmap. All our workouts are planned as part of a monthly calendar by our Programming Team. This ensures that you are getting a consistent experience, regardless of the instructor and that every workout planned has a specific goal with progressions, regressions, and lateralizations for every exercise.

 Describe the atmosphere? Ideal demographic? All levels?

Our clients describe Refine Method as personal training with the energy of a small group class. Refine’s differentiator is its ability to tailor its workout and the environment to best suit each client–there is no “one size fits all workout.” The workout is challenging but scalable, and the community is supportive, not competitive.  Ultimately, we want you to leave your workout feeling invigorated and proud of what your body is capable of.

 What is your favorite workout move?

Ditch the Crunches and try some Planks! Core training is one area where we’ve seen a great shift in thinking in the past 20 years. Back pain specialist Dr. Stuart McGill has demonstrated that repeated flexing and extending of your lower back (like you do in a Crunch) can lead to postural problems and back injury. Instead, at Refine we focus on neutral spine core work like planks, roll-outs, bird dogs, and kettlebell carries, where you brace your core and maintain a stable spine, adding challenge by moving your arms and legs.


When I’m teaching, I’m most impressed by a student who?

I’m most impressed by a student who Is eager to learn. At Refine, we focus not just on teaching clients to move differently, but to think differently. Often this means letting go of things you think you know about fitness and working out differently, which can be scary.  I’m always excited to teach clients who are willing to take that leap of faith and try something new.

When I’m feeling unmotivated to work out I?

When I’m feeling unmotivated to work out, I give myself permission to do less, so long as I do something. Often this means just putting on my sneakers and going for a walk. Non-exercise activity, like a brisk walk, is not only a great way to get your brain and body into the mindset of working out on days that you aren’t motivated, but it is also a vital contributor to your long-term health.
