The Daily’s Book Club is thrilled to present our February Author of the Month: chart-topping author, Kate Hamer! Get ready to fall into the mystery and suspense of her debut novel, The Girl in the Red Coat! Kate Hamer, new to the literary world, is not new to the world of mystery. She spent her early life working as a television documentary-maker, but embraced her creative ability further when she studied creative writing at Aberystwyth University in 2011. There, she was awarded a prize for the best beginning of a novel – the work that would eventually become her debut novel, The Girl in the Red Coat. Kate Hamer is a newcomer to the literary world, but she has arrived with as much shock and awe as an author can manage. While The Girl in the Red Coat may be her first novel, it certainly doesn’t feel like it. Hamer infuses so much emotion and anxiety in her writing, that it only drags the reader further and further into the mystery. Called by some critics to be the story of Little Red Riding Hood for the modern era, Hamer has been hurled into the top of the best-seller’s lists with this novel. A coming-of-age thriller, it has been dubbed “a powerful tale of loss” by The Guardian. Hamer conveys, with powerful emotion and grief, both sides of the story of an abduction: the displacement of the child, and the fear of the mother. And if you find that you truly did enjoy The Girl in the Red Coat, don’t worry, Hamer is currently working on her second book – another thriller. Join Spa Week’s Book Club!
