The Daily’s Book Club is thrilled to present our November Author of the Month: award-winning author, Marie-Helene Bertino! Get ready to fall in love with her charming and moving book, 2 A.M. at the Cat’s Pajamas.

Teacher and author, Marie-Helene Bertino has always surrounded herself with writing. She works as an instructor at the One Story Workshop for Writers as well as at the Creative Writing Program at NYU. Her book, 2 A.M. at the Cat’s Pajamas, was her debut into the world of full-length novels, and it’s the perfect story for the upcoming holiday season. Bertino spent six years prior to publishing this novel working as an editor and writing instructor at One Story. A Philadelphia native, she currently lives in Brooklyn with her puppy, Fox. As it happens, Philadelphia is the location and inspiration for her amazing new story.

Inspired by her hometown and the varied history of the city, Bertino crafts a story of dedication, but also magic. In an interview with The Paris Review, she explained where this sentiment came from: “As a Philly girl, you feel like, to succeed, you have to work and work and work. Nothing will be handed to you, nothing is a guarantee, there’s no safety. The only thing you can control is how hard you work.” These values are something that she imparts into her work, creating a story that pulls at the heartstrings and has you rooting for the characters.

The story of a 9-year-old girl’s Christmas Eve eve and her desire to live out her dream to sing in a jazz club is filled with such holiday spirit and warming wit, it is a hard book to put down. Make it part of your holiday shopping list and get into the holiday spirit early! We’ll be reviewing 2 A.M. at the Cat’s Pajamas here on the blog as our Book of the month, so get reading and stay tuned!
