Are you at risk for developing water bottle lips? We all know that drinking plenty of water is a healthy habit, but what many people don’t know is that drinking from a water bottle repeatedly, can cause unwanted permanent wrinkle lines called Water Bottle Lips. Dozens of women have come into my practice puzzled by these lines and wrinkles around their lips. It’s a condition termed “smoker’s lips” because of the similar pattern of wrinkles found on the faces of long-term, heavy smokers. However, many of these women have never smoked a day in their life. Instead, they’re keeping hydrated and drinking from water bottles. When drinking from a water bottle, the face pretty much makes the same facial movements as when smoking a cigarette. Over time, that face creates permanent wrinkle lines. People who drink from water bottles consistently throughout the day, for about two years, will start to develop noticeable smoker’s lips. I personally recommend that water drinkers use wide-mouthed bottles or cups, allowing the upper lip to stay relaxed while drinking to eliminate further damage. For those of us who have been drinking out of water bottles for years and already have unwanted visible lines, there are fortunately some quick-fix cosmetic solutions. For the many women coming into my office for this issue, I recommend using dermal fillers to fill the wrinkles around the lips. Dermal fillers work to add volume and smooth out the deep creases that run from the nose to the mouth. The fillers are directly injected into the skin in order to eliminate the wrinkles. Depending on the type of filler used, the effects can last anywhere from six months to two years. My preferred filler for this treatment is Restylane Silk, and FDA approved Hyaluronic Acid filler with an indication for lip and lip line correction. Because of its unique characteristics, it provides a very natural result. Another highly effective procedure for eliminating lines around the lips is Thermismooth, a non-invasive procedure performed using a specially designed wand that gently heats the skin’s surface using radiofrequency energy. Thermismooth is used to target problem areas around the eyes, mouth, cheeks, and neck. Within 3 to 6 sessions, patients will see a noticeable difference on these pesky water bottle lip lines. Many patients describe Thermismooth as a relaxing, warm, facial massage. It’s a pleasant and effective treatment that is completely non-invasive and involves no downtime. At the end of the day, this shouldn’t discourage people from drinking water – it should serve as a reminder that constantly performing the same facial motions can increase our chance of developing fine lines and wrinkles. If you’re lucky enough not to have permanent wrinkle lines around your mouth, then a quick and simple fix is to start drinking from a wider brimmed glass and remember to keep your upper lip relaxed.
