Here at Spa Week, we couldn’t be happier about the rest of the world starting to pay attention to the benefits of mindfulness. In the past few years, we’ve noticed mindfulness apps popping up all over and we’ve even seen mindfulness studios in big cities– places where you can go to relax for a few minutes in the middle of a busy day. Mindfulness is a great way to reset, relax, and stay in touch with your body and your mind– and we think it’s one of the key components of living well.

 

If you’re new to this mindfulness trend, you might not know where to start, but it’s easier than it seems. Take 5 minutes out of your day to try one of these 5 exercises– you’ll be a mindfulness pro in no time!

1. Try a mindfulness app

Those apps we mentioned? They’re a great place to start. Some great options are Insight Timer, Aura, and Omvana– all of which will help you meditate. Another great app is Stop, Breathe & Think and they’ll tell you everything you need to know about mindfulness: what it is, why it’s beneficial, and what to expect when you start. 2. Do a body scan every night before you go to bed or every morning when you wake up.

When starting a new habit or hobby, one of the most important things is to be consistent. It’s not important if you’re practicing mindfulness for 2 minutes, 5 minutes, or 20 minutes every day. What matters is that you’re doing it every day. A body scan is one of the simplest mindfulness exercises– go through every inch of your body (starting with the top of your head and ending with the tips of your toes), and pay attention to how you feel. Do you have any pain? Any tingling? This exercise will help you pay attention to your mind and your body.  

3. Eat your food mindfully.

Another easy way to start practicing mindfulness? Do it while you eat. What could be more fun than paying super close attention to your food? Eating mindfully just means taking note of all the aspects of your food. What does it smell and look like? And of course, most importantly, how does it taste? Paying careful attention to your food can help you to eat less (because you’ll notice when you’re full!) and it can even make your food taste better. The power of the mind, right?!

4. 5 Minutes (or 2 minutes) of breath focus.

One the most popular and common mindfulness exercises is deep breathing and breath focus. The exercise is pretty simple– breathe carefully and try not to think about anything other than your breathing. It can be hard– your mind will definitely wander– but the more you do it, the easier it will get.

5. Mindfully listen to your favorite song

Who doesn’t love jamming out to their favorite song? Mindful listening is an important skill and there’s no better place to start than with your favorite song. Put on your favorite song and try to just listen to it– don’t sing along, don’t think about how the music makes you feel, and don’t think about anything else. It’s pretty hard, right? Most of the time that we’re listening to anyone, we’re thinking about something else– most often, how we’ll respond to the person we’re listening to. Start mindfully listening to a song and next thing you know, you’ll be listening more carefully to everyone in your life– and trust us, they’ll notice.
