If there’s one fitness trend that’s taken us by storm in 2018, it’s HIIT.  Every fitness star and bodybuilder you’re seeing at the gym is into it and it’s quickly replacing all other workout fads. But what exactly is HIIT and can it help you? We’re here to give you the low-down!

What is HIIT?

HIIT stands for high intensity interval training–there’s no specific set regimen involved with this workout, but it should never last longer than 30 minutes. It’s a form of interval training that involves alternating short periods of extremely intense cardio exercise with less intense recovery periods.

What are the benefits?

HIIT workouts are great for your metabolism. They’re quick and convenient– since you don’t need any equipment to do a HIIT workout and they should last no longer than 30 minutes, you can get your workout in any place, any time.

HIIT is also great for burning fat, great for heart health, and helps you to lose weight while maintaining muscle.

Are there any risks?

Like with any workout, you should consult your doctor before participating in HIIT. For HIIT to be effective, you need to be doing workouts at the maximum intensity possible for you, so that can be more of a risk for some people.

How can I do it?

The routine should involve a warm up period (don’t skip this!), several repetitions of a high-intensity exercise, separated by medium intensity exercise for recovery, then a cool down period. Check out some fun HIIT workouts here.
