You’ve probably heard of the Keto Diet. It’s that new trendy diet that’s literally everywhere. The idea is you eat a lot of fat to get skinny. Yes, you read that right, a high fat diet could actually help you lose weight. Have some questions? Us too, so we did some digging…

 

What is the keto diet really?

The Keto Diet is a diet designed to put your body into ketosis – a natural process that helps you survive when food intake is low. During that state, our bodies produce ketones, which are breakdowns of fat in the liver. On this diet you are actually able to shift your metabolism.

 

What can I eat?

The Keto Diet is a low-carb, low-sugar, high-fat diet. So you can (and should) eat a lot of seafood and meats on the diet. You can drink coffee, tea, and water but no (or limited) wine is suggested! Most meals on the keto diet are pretty restrictive, but you can find a lot of recipes that fit the rules. Some of our favorite Keto blogs are I Breathe I’m Hungry, Ketogasm, and Keto Connect.

 

What can’t I eat?

Anything with a lot of sugar or carbohydrates. You’ll definitely want to avoid all grains and potatoes, but also anything with high sugar content– so no fruit, and you’ll want to limit your vegetables too.

 

Who’s doing it?

Everyone. No, really, this diet has been around for almost a century, and it’s something that a lot of people (celebrities and the non-famous among us) have tried.

 

Is it safe?

The Keto diet is safe for most people, but you should avoid it if you’re breastfeeding or have diabetes or high blood pressure. Most people experience a “Keto Flu” during the first few days of the diet. It’s… not fun. When you cut back on carbs, you excrete extra water through your urine… and you’ll basically be really dehydrated for a while. The symptoms are usually fatigue, headaches, and pain. To relieve symptoms during this period make sure you’re drinking plenty of water, eating lots of fat, sodium, potassium, and magnesium, and making sleep a top priority.

 

So… does it work?

It depends who you ask. A lot of people report a sharp weight loss over the first few weeks, but it’s difficult to sustain. Some people do continue the diet, and credit it with changing their lives. But others say the negative side effects are too difficult to deal with, and that it’s not worth it or not effective for their body types. Consensus?  Like with any diet, talk to your doctor before you start to make sure it’s safe for you.
