As we welcome 2019, we want to remind all of our loyal readers that self-care is essential! In 2019, we want you to spend more time taking care of yourself- that means eating healthy food, taking breaks, enjoying the little things in life, sticking to a regular routine, and so much more. Here are 10 little ways to focus on self-care in the new year:

  1. Identify self-care rituals that you enjoy.

The most important part of self-care is making sure that you actually enjoy what you’re doing! While taking a bath and curling up with a good book might be the perfect night in for some people, you might enjoy a full spa day or going for a run more! Do what works for you.

2. Break up your self-care time – you don’t need to do it all at once.

Saying “I’m going to do one hour of self-care time every single day,” might seem intimidating. Break it up into 10 or 20 minute intervals by doing quick little things that make you feel good throughout the day.

3. Set an alarm for your bedtime!

Sleep is one of the best ways to take care of yourself… and the most essential. If you have trouble sleeping or don’t get enough sleep, it can ruin your whole day and leave you feeling off. That’s why setting a regular sleep schedule is one of the healthiest choices you can make. Set an alarm for bedtime and stick to it– it’ll seriously change your life.

4. Be assertive about your boundaries.

It can be hard to say no to people you care about (we all deal with #FOMO) and assert your boundaries, but we all need to do just that! If you’re feeling overwhelmed and need to take some time for yourself, do it. If you need to call it an early night after hanging out with friends, tell them. Do what works for you and don’t apologize for it.

5. Schedule time for yourself.

One of the biggest challenges of self-care is actually making the time to do it. That’s why we recommend scheduling time for yourself. If “me time” is on your calendar, you’re more likely to stick the plan and not change your mind.

6. Focus on doing little things often, instead of big things rarely.

You might think that the best self-care items are the big ones: a fancy dinner or a dream vacation. But those little things that make you happy matter too, and you should focus on them throughout the day!

7. Indulge in cheat meals when you need them.

Eating healthy is definitely an important part of living a healthy lifestyle, and we don’t recommend cheating on your diet too often. But every once in a while you need a cheat meal, and when you do, you should let yourself indulge without feeling guilty.

8. Drink a lot of water!

This may not feel like the ultimate treat yourself moment, but drinking water will leave you feeling more energized, happier, and, of course, hydrated! Make one of your goals in the new year to drink water constantly, as much as you can. Your body will thank you.

9. Write down one positive thought every day.

Positive thinking can really transform your mood. This year, I wrote down one positive thought or one good thing that happened every day and it really helped me to stay optimistic and keep me in a good mood. It’s also been fun to look back on all of the great things that have happened this year!

10. Compliment yourself.

Saying nice things about yourself is a struggle for all of us… no one has that high self-esteem. Still, complimenting yourself is an important way to focus on self-care and focus on the great things about yourself. Try being nice to yourself- it’ll change your mood and your perception of yourself!
